LazyLawn’s new FireGuard® 25mm has been independently tested to meet the latest European fire protection standards

What are the features of FireGuard® 25mm artificial grass?

As well as slip resistance, suitability for high traffic areas, UV stability and a 7 year guarantee, FireGuard® is ideal for grassy-looking durable surfaces for indoor spaces and events. Its 25mm straight and curly pile, backed with Latex, gives a realistic grass look and feel with high resistance.

But where it really stands out above any inferior alternatives is for its fire testing classification.

For many areas where the public are in attendance – hotels, arenas, indoor events and venues – it is important to use floor coverings with increased fire classifications. This ensures safety and restricts the spread in the case of a fire outbreak.

How is FireGuard®’s classified as Cfl-s1 fire-rated?

For many areas with public footfall, such as hotels, theatres, public facilities or cinemas, there are often increased requirements for fire behaviour and normally a floor covering with the requirement of class Cfl s1 according to EN 13501-1 is required. This is the European fire protection standard within this realm, with the suffix ‘fl’ specifically relating to flooring.

Testing flammability, flame spread, smoke density and dripping, a commercial flooring surface must meet or exceed class Cfl-s1 for safety. Within the category of textile floors, the fire tests EN ISO 11925-2 and EN ISO 9239-1 are used specifically for horizontally mounted floor surfaces.

During FireGuard®’ testing, a test specimen is placed horizontally and exposed to a gas-fired heat source. Any flame that developed is recorded and its spread length and speed of spread noted. Any smoke levels are recorded. The distance of burn is measured in kilowatts per square metre. There are four fire protection classes where a material might fit, depending on its behaviour when alight: non-combustible, flame-retardant, normal flammable and easily flammable.

For FireGuard®, its burn spread is 4.5 kW/m2 which is the Cfl standard.

Smoke production during FireGuard® testing was negligible, and therefore is classified s1.

FireGuard® has a spread of flame classification within EN13501 of Cfl-s1 which means it can be described as a “flame-retardant floor covering”.

Available now from LazyLawn

FireGuard® is available direct from LazyLawn, part of Evergreens UK Group, who will be extending the range to include colours from 2025. The Group’s EPD Verified 100% circular ONE-DNA™ also meets Cfl-s1 and Bfl-s1 (with infill) standards.

Ready for the installation of new play equipment, our LazyLawn Sandbach team have excelled in another outdoor play extension at a Cheshire primary school. Tarporley Primary School, between Chester and Nantwich, now has a 98 square metre outdoor play area, finished and ready for play in LazyLawn artificial grass.

Fast turnaround in wet weather

Meeting and assessing the site in mid-March 2024, LazyLawn’s Steve Johnson and his team were able to liaise closely with grounds and school management to advise on product selection and installation dates.  Contending with abnormally wet British weather, finding a window for installation was not straightforward. With a very poor and wet forecast, it had to be in four days’ time or not for another two months! The school’s grounds team had to clear the area swiftly in preparation as LazyLawn’s Steve and colleague Kohl readied for a weekend start.

Hidden challenges

The area required removal of a raised steel manhole cover which was hidden under pallets and old artificial grass. Removing the old and replacing with a new recessed cover to prevent an ongoing trip hazard, the team set to screeding the area.  Mixed on site, this wet-pour shock pad consists of recycled rubber crumb and resin. Cured by day two on site, this free-draining, impact absorbent shock pad was ready for its LazyLawn artificial grass finish – chosen for its durability, softness and realistic colour. Using one 100 square metre roll meant there was minimal wastage from offcuts too.

Ready for action

The previous space, full of undulating imperfections and puddling hotspots, was completely rejuvenated with LazyLawn artificial grass. Transformed to a level and attractive outdoor space that would be both functional and hard-wearing to withstand the rigours of children’s play and British weather conditions, the new play area will be finished and ready for action once the play equipment has been completed.

“Steve and the team are incredibly knowledgeable in surfacing and gave us a lot of good advice as to how best to tackle the area. Everyone in the LazyLawn team was very accommodating and worked hard throughout the install. Now that the playground equipment is in place, the children are straight out the door and enjoying outdoor play as soon as the weather (and teacher!) allows. No more pooling or moss removal for me either. It’s a superb transformation and the children are really making the most of it at every opportunity!”

The children – taking to X (Twitter) to share their thanks – are eager to expand their outdoor play time and the teachers will be able to extend their outdoor learning experiences into the new garden this Summer.

A massive THANK YOU to Steve and his team from @lazylawn for fitting our new artificial grass in our EYFS outdoor area! The children are so pleased with the result and can’t wait to get stuck into their play #watchthisspace #letyourlightshine”

The steps at The Lexicon, Bond Square, Bracknell have once again been dressed to welcome its Spring and Summer retail visitors. Extending its bold and bright history, shoppers are treated and greeted this year with a primary colour display as they approach their shopping experience at the mall in Berkshire.

Since 2019, the LazyLawn Expo team have returned each year (bar the pandemic) to fit and hit the client design brief with a strong splash of colour upon the steps that lead the way to the entrance – and this year goes one step further.

Previous LazyExpo Step Displays (2019, 2021, 2022):

Simple but stunning surface design

Developing the step story in artificial grass from that first 2019 installation in plain green with a simple one-step logo, this year’s artwork features red, yellow, green striped edges along the bright blue esplanade.  Finished with a repeating white The Lexicon logo, the team have used around 170 square metres of Fun Grass at a depth of 10mm.

A finely-tuned puzzle

As in the last five installations, the intricacies of each logo piece are pre-made at the company’s cutting facilities in Oakham, Rutland. This year saw the additional pre-cutting of the striped grass sections for each step. The puzzle is then assembled and skillfully installed in situ.

Whilst the end results look seamless and straightforward, it is always a challenging installation - and one to which we love to rise! There’s a lot of preparatory work in the step sections themselves, as well as the assembly and accuracy required to fit and fix the pieces securely and safely in place. However, it’s always worth it when we take a step back and take in the overall effect when it’s complete.

Delivering the client brief for visitor engagement

The LazyLawn Creative team discuss the possibilities for the design each year, with ideas briefed by the management team at The Lexicon – and it never disappoints.

Once again, I'm amazed at the end results on the steps this year. The LazyLawn team are brilliant - whatever wild and wacky ideas we throw at them, they always come back with a great interpretation of our design brief.

This year, the step design and delivery has really taken our breath away - the combination of colours and its simple yet striking stripe design has been incredibly well received by all who have seen it. And particularly the public response has been fantastic - especially on a sunny day, it is attracting people to sit, take photos and enjoy what would otherwise be an unexciting space. It makes a great, bold, bright statement and we love it!

The installation usually remains down from early May throughout the summer months, removed by the client when it suits.

Experts in event and logo flooring and surface designs

LazyExpo design, supply and fit temporary and permanent indoor and outdoor artificial grass displays across the world. The durable, versatile and functional artificial grass offers  a great way to promote a product, company, brand or event. The synthetic surfaces are ideal for busy commercial environments and use safe, low-maintenance and firmly fixed materials that are designed so that they may be easily removed at the end of the event/promotion.

Opened at an official ceremony headlined by Stoke City’s Junior Tchamedeu & Port Vale’s James Wilson, Jason Lowe & Sian McHugh in November 2023, Sandon Primary Academy’s brand new sports pitch has already proved a fantastic addition to the school’s outdoor facilities.

With the front approach to the school already covered with LazyLawn artificial surfaces, this latest 2000 square metre installation extends the School’s sports provision and will be an invaluable space for outdoor learning activities into 2024 and beyond.

2000 square metre LazyLawn Vitality 30mm sports pitch at Sandon Academy, Meir

Responsible for all the site’s artificial grass and resin-bound surfaces, Steve Johnson of LazyLawn Sandbach returned to the site in this latest project, just one in a number completed over the last eight years. His team are experts in the supply and installation of synthetic surfaces and wet-pour safety surfaces.

A level playing field

The 7-a-side pitch was fitted with LazyLawn Vitality product in a 30mm depth in a project that took just over three months to complete. The install was slightly hampered by contending with British wintry conditions, the additional complication of groundworks and surface preparation and levelling out a natural dip that was discovered in the area. The surrounding fencing had been removed and there was additional remediation of the ground and replacement of the pin curbs to rectify.

Right product for purpose and budget

“We’ve worked with Steve and his team at LazyLawn and Xternal Worx since 2016 – the quality and the choice of product is superb.” explains Head Teacher Rachel Beckett, who was keen to ensure the high quality and finish had continuity across the playgrounds and sports surfaces at the Academy.  She also wanted to make sure the right product and specification was selected for purpose and budget. She continues: “Other suppliers were keen to push 3G and 4G pitches but Steve understood exactly what we really needed – this is a pitch for small children, after all!”.

Rachel and her grounds team were also impressed with the striped finish the Vitality 30mm created. With the fence removal, she could ensure the view from her office was unencumbered, perfect for her to enjoy the open space and keep an eye on the sporting activities of the pupils easily.

Continuity and professionalism

In addition to the dip remediation, there was an 820 metre stretch of resin-bound bark-effect perimeter installed – in black for a stark contrast to the lush green of the pitch.  With Steve’s 10-strong team enlisted as needed for concreting, grass installation, resin bound mulch and white-line marking, the project began at the start of July and saw its conclusion in late October.  Normally requiring 300 tonnes of in-fill prior to artificial grass installation, the additional dip fill meant over 530 tonnes of MOT type 1 aggregate and 6mm-to-dust granite was delivered across the project.

“Steve and his team are a credit to your company.” continues Rachel.  “He takes time and would never cut corners – that’s why he continues to be our preferred contractor”.

Not a blade of natural grass was removed, with all of the turf being re-laid across the wider perimeters encircling the pitch itself.

Laxton Junior School enjoys clean, safe and durable outdoor learning and play with artificial grass.

Outdoor play is understandably an important part of a child’s day at school and an integral part of the national curriculum. The physical and cognitive development, health and fitness an interactive playground provides allows children to learn in an open air environment, whilst fuelling their social skills (and encouraging them to have fun, too!)

Artificial grass at a play area at Laxton Junior School

Juggling outdoor play time with British weather conditions, it is a constant struggle to maintain a clean, safe and usable outdoor space term in, term out. At Laxton Junior School in Northamptonshire, their EYFS pupils can enjoy their new outside space, fitted with an 80 square metre safe and durable LazyLawn Wonder Yarn 36mm artificial grass installation. The children and staff can also make best use of their external environment without the risk of a slippery mud bath along the way.

Beneath the installed artificial grass is a 25mm foam underlay shockpad which not only provides the play surface with cushioned bounce and the optimum fall protection but adds both insulation and a free draining layer.

COMFORT, SAFETY AND PRACTICALITY AT PLAY

Specified, designed and installed with comfort, safety and practicality in mind, the play area, completed in the summer holidays in August 2022, was ready for the rigours of term-time play and its opening event.  Part of the broader soft and hard landscaping project around the school grounds, the LazyLawn forms a striking canvas for the play equipment and allows for cushioned play without the risk of puddles and muddy patches.

ADAPTABILITY AND VERSATILITY

Pre-install, the contractor and the LazyLawn team worked closely and customer support and communication was critical, especially as the brief and scope of works was modified in its early stages.  The support team at LazyLawn handled this smoothly and professionally and kept all parties informed of any implications this may have had on the installation itself.

An artificial grass playground at Laxton Junior School

ARTIFICIAL GRASS PIONEERS

Supplying and installing the material over 3 days last summer, the LazyLawn Wonder Yarn, specified on this project by CDC Studio Architects, is widely recommended as one of the most reputable quality artificial grass products supplied by the pioneers in its manufacture and supply for over 35 years, Evergreens UK Group. The LazyLawn portfolio extends across outdoor play, landscape, flat roofs, sport and public arena projects – indoors and out – across the UK.

AFTERCARE AND CONTRACTOR LIAISON

Working with the Cambridgeshire-based specialist building contractor Orientrose Contracts, the LazyLawn team returned post-installation to ensure the contractor and client were happy with all elements, particularly in light of the prospective Grand Opening event for which a timely completion was imperative.

The timber trim trail equipment includes climbing rigging, ramps and look-out points, with platforms cushioned with LazyLawn to provide continuity and slip-free play. Extending the use of the grass up the playframe ramp and platforms adds an extra level of practical function and its rich colour forms a bright and striking contrast to the timber frameworks and fencing. The design flexibility allows for rolling curves and interest across the play area.

Working with LazyLawn for the first time and pleasantly surprised to see its versatility across the project, Josh John of Orientrose said: “Customer service was excellent pre-installation and Katie Driver (LazyLawn Project Coordinator) was extremely proactive when the scope was modified and was able to confirm implications of this change very quickly. We’ve all been impressed with how the project has taken shape – particularly how the grass has been used on the play equipment itself.”

Speaking with school representatives, the teachers and children have been very complimentary about the play area, its completion and its transformation. The remodelling from the existing playground to an exciting, all-weather external space means the children can enjoy both breaktime play and an engaging outdoor learning experience throughout  their school days.

Challenge Accepted: Anneka Rice’s new Channel 5 show calls for artificial grass for big dogs activity area at animal rescue centre in Biggin Hill

Five days before filming the final episode of the revived cult classic TV series, Challenge Anneka, LazyLawn HQ received a plea to help. The call was for hard-wearing, pet-friendly artificial grass, to be supplied and professionally installed at the Foal Farm Animal Rescue Centre in Biggin Hill, Kent. That call was answered by Adrian Wilkinson from LazyLawn Kent.

The area to receive the Challenge Anneka and LazyLawn treatment was around the Activity and Play Area for the larger dogs.  Previously laid with now tired artificial turf – to be reused elsewhere in the Centre – the play area was to house tunnels and obstacles to give welcome exercise and outdoor social space for the larger animals.

Anneka Rice with a dog on artificial grass

Foal Farm has been rescuing and rehoming neglected animals in and around Kent for more than 60 years and has rehomed over 500 dogs, cats and smaller animals as well as sanctuary for 100 farm animals on its 26 acre site. Since the pandemic, there has been a 31% decline in dog adoption but at the same time, the number of dogs given up for adoption has skyrocketed because of the cost of living crisis, so Foal Farm desperately needed to improve its facilities.

As is often the case with media projects such as this, timing and flexibility was absolutely imperative. Agreeing to supply the 132 square metres of LazyLawn “Vitality” grass (hard wearing, durable turf, ideal for high use) and provide his installation skills and time for free at such short notice, Adrian liaised with the production team and visited the site for the first time just two days after agreeing to help. It was also just two days before installing and filming. This visit was important to assess the location and access as well as the ground conditions upon which the grass would be laid.

Adrian explains: “We had a number of calls with the LazyLawn head office, the production team and Anneka herself prior to filming to make sure that everything ran smoothly.  There were a number of elements to contend with, from the delivery of the product to negotiating the filming schedule, other contractors on site – and the ever-challenging British weather.”

Picture of Anneka Rice with a LazyLawn staff member
A dog from the Rescue Centre lying down on artificial grass

Adrian and Anneka spoke on the phone to set up the project’s delivery, and she also engaged with him throughout filming as the play area progressed. On site first thing on 18 November, it was only from around 4pm that he could start the installation – and did not finish until past 10pm!

The resulting outdoor activity area has given a new lease of life to the space, and allows vital exercise and play space for the bigger dogs. The centre also hasa brand new hydrotherapy pool installed as part of the project.

Anneka thanked LazyLawn and Adrian for their generosity in supplying and installing the grass:  Of the final project, she said:The Challenge was to renovate the dog quarters.  We renovated a large drafty hanger, insulating it, and installing state of the art kennels.  As well as this we made three areas outside for the dogs, for them to play and relax and we surprised the charity with a hydrotherapy pool.   [The landscapers and volunteers] worked day and night and we were elated by the end.”

Ahead of the Kent project completion, Anneka also made an emotional plea on Medway radio to appeal for volunteers to help.  Challenge Anneka’s premise is to seek out community projects where help is desperately needed, and Foal Farm and its artificial grass play area was featured in the final 90 minute episode which aired on Channel 5 on Saturday 18 March 2023 at 8.50pm.

Since the start of the EFL League One season back in August 2022, the Burton Albion dug-out and tunnel exit at the Pirelli Stadium has been decked in an apron of durable, vibrant green LazyLawn artificial grass, complete with the Brewers crest.

With some of the harshest British weather conditions behind them, the LazyLawn team headed back to the stadium in January 2023.  Pictured below with the BAFC Chairman Ben Robinson MBE DL and the first team manager Dino Maamria, LazyLawn Derbyshire’s Haydn Ford took some time out with his team of installers to inspect and admire their workmanship.

Emblazoned with the LazyLawn logo, visible pitchside to show the company’s support and ongoing team sponsorship, the tunnel exit has seen both high traffic and drama in the first half of the season. Burton are now sitting 16th in League One after winning three from their last five games – a run of form that management and fans hope will continue to lift them out of the relegation zone.

UK pioneers in the manufacture and supply of artificial grass, LazyLawn has released a popular artificial grass golf accessory, the Fairway Mat, for hard-wearing, portable, versatile putting practise during the Winter season.

Offering damage protection for the most prestigious of golf courses and used throughout the UK including at St Andrews, the convenient and portable Fairway Mat provides a resilient surface of high quality fibre bonded material with a strong backing.

The quality, stable surface does not flatten or loosen, allowing golf professionals and amateurs alike to improve strike rates and continue their wet season games with ease.

Practise Makes Perfect

A masterstroke for course managers and golfing pros, the Fairway Mat is supplied at 35cm x 16.5cm and comes in a natural-looking green colour with 3 tee holes, a wider rounded front tee end and a convenient handle to attach to your golf bag or allow you to carry by hand.

Shaping the UK Artificial Grass Marketplace

With an RRP of £4.99 and available for resale in volume, the Fairway Mat is manufactured in the UK by the brand’s owner Evergreens UK Group. The Rutland-based group has been shaping the UK marketplace for artificial turf for over 35 years.

Deep in the thick of one of the wettest Winters in recent history, golf professionals will be frustrated and restricted as they try to hone their golfing technique and putting skills.

This is where synthetic turf can really make a difference. Artificial grass putting greens play consistently well, with chipping turfs and driving areas requiring very little care or upkeep.

Free draining artificial grass gives all-year-round playability and respite to golf course managers who can focus on fairway and green preparation without dealing with careless practise damage.

LazyLawn Artificial grass on a golf course

LazyLawn is a well-established brand and UK market leader with a nationwide network of licensed installers and a reputation for product innovation, superior product durability and range versatility.

Creating the perfect training conditions for future England football sensations, LazyLawn West Midlands have installed a 5-a-side multi-use games area at the Solihull primary school at which England star Jack Grealish was a pupil.

Unveiled on 29 November 2022 and featured on BBC Breakfast, the previously waterlogged, boggy and swampy field at Our Lady of Compassion Catholic Primary School in Solihull has been transformed into a vibrant play surface. Where there was previously no suitable surface or space for outdoor play, the children can now enjoy a fully usable and durable games area, free draining and stable under foot – a long way from its boggy muddy past where Grealish would have played.

Former pupil Jack attended the school until the age of 11.  He has gone on to achieve Premier League football success for Aston Villa and Manchester City, as well as his now established place in the national side.  27-year-old Grealish currently has 25 caps and 2 England goals under his international career belt and has been an ever-present member of the England team playing at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The pitch was installed over three days in November 2022 by LazyLawn West Midlands.  The 4-strong team first created a six-inch raised platform and prepared the surface with 30 tonnes of hardcore to ensure free drainage.  Using 100 square metres of Lusso 30mm olive-green artificial grass, the pitch was also finished with white artificial grass line marking. The LazyLawn team installed the goal posts and the corner flags, bedecked in the School’s colours.

LazyLawn West Midlands Dallan Tan said: “This was a great opportunity to transform a muddy field unsuitable for outdoor play into an all-season, all-sports area. Using artificial grass offers the children a clean and safe play environment and provides the school with a hard-wearing, long-lasting, free-draining solution. A real win-win for everyone.”

Headteacher Neil Emery is very pleased with the new pitch and play area which allows the children extensive outdoor play on a safe, clean, durable surface – and maybe the new pitch will open the opportunities for the next Jack Grealish to extend their soccer skills at the School.
